I know what it is like to struggle with web design. When I first started it was without any coding experience, no sales skills, and with very little in savings. Without recapping my whole backstory story let me just say... it was rough.
My only source of new projects was practically begging for working on freelance sites and taking whatever I could get. My approach to “winning” projects? Being the person who would do the most amount of work for the last amount of pay. I would do week-long projects for a few hundred dollars - and clients still demanded more.
Several months went by and I was still making nothing. The more I tried the more businesses could see I desperately I needed the work. Clients would mess me around with pay, dozens of unneeded changes, and ridiculous demands. When you don’t know your worth there are a lot of people waiting to take advantage.
A few months in and I was badly stuck being a low priced, overworked freelancer. I had less savings than when I started, no idea how to find proper clients, and no ability to create real sales.
When I look back at that time I realize a lot of things I was doing wrong...
So how did I go from struggling for months to sell small $200 sites to making well over $100,000 the next year... I stopped thinking in terms of code and design and instead focused on sales.
I realized that if I wanted to make big money I had to be able to make even more money for my clients. Sounds simple but this is where a lot of people mess up.
The big profitable clients don’t pay for websites - they pay for the results a website can get. While the small clients that pay peanuts have a million design ideas and focus on all the wrong things the big clients only focus on one thing - results.
The big profitable clients don’t care how long you work or how many pages the website is - they just want you to create a website that can bring in actual dollars. The better the results you can produce, the more you get paid and the more in demand you are.
Simple but not as easy as it sounds.
So what does it all boil down to? Being able to sell.
The best web designers continually make the most money while working with the best clients because:
The best web businesses have mastered sales and left the other freelancers behind to fight for the scraps.
