Video 3: Knowing Your Value as a Web Designer

Video notes below

Video Notes:

If someone asked you how much you are worth as a web designer how would you answer?

If your answer was in terms of the number of hours worked or the number of pages you designed - then you will also be limited.

If you think of yourself as a "$30 an hour" or "$200 a page" web designer the only way you can make more money is to do more work (usually a LOT more work).

Whatever we decide to measure our value by is also what we will be inclined to focus on when it comes to trying to make more money.

Web designers who price by the hour tend to focus on how to work more hours. Web designers who focus on charging X amount of dollars per project are going to focus on how to keep doing more and more projects.

The most profitable (read: the best) web designers don't price by the hour, or the amount of code, they price by the value and the results that they deliver.

This allows them to scale their income very fast. The more results they can produce, the more they can earn. It is independent of how much they worked.

When you understand how this works (and use it yourself), you can get profitable very fast and free up your time and your income. You are getting paid based on your track record of results and the experience you bring to every job. So as time passes you become more and more valuable and you can justify higher and higher prices.

This is a key concept to get at this stage so you can start heading in the right direction from the start.
